The 12-Step Programme
Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is a ‘Twelve Step’ fellowship dedicated to helping anyone suffering because of their drinking. The Twelve Step programme is the suggested format for recovery from alcoholism and its effects. A.A. is for anyone with a desire to tackle their own drink problem.
There are approx. 750 AA Groups in Ireland with an estimated 13,000 A.A. members and 76,000 meetings a year. Books pamphlets and cassettes with information about the A.A. programme are available.
A.A. is voluntary, anonymous, and confidential without dues or fees. A.A. is a self-help recovery programme, and is not intended as a replacement for professional therapy or treatment, where needed.
Regular meetings allow ordinary people with similar drink-related problems to get together, share their experiences, strength and hope, and learn from each other about alcoholism and how to cope with its effects.
